Losing access to an important platform or login is stressful. It happens more often than you’d think. A team member leaves. A password gets lost. An account was set up under someone else’s email.
The good news is that most things can be recovered if you act quickly and know what to do.
First, stay calm
Most platforms have recovery options built in. As long as you still have access to the associated email or billing details, you can usually reset your login.
Start by trying:
- Password reset links
- Two-factor codes
- Admin contacts listed on the account
- Support chats or email recovery
If that doesn’t work, move to the next step.
Contact platform support
Here’s what to send when contacting support:
- Your business name
- The domain or account you’re trying to access
- Proof of ownership (like invoices, screenshots, or emails)
- A clear explanation of what happened
Support teams will usually help if you can show that you’re the rightful owner. It might take a few days.
If an ex-employee controls the account
This is where things get tricky. If someone else set up the account and won’t hand it over:
- Start by asking nicely and clearly
- Check if they used a company email — if so, reset it
- Look for any shared passwords or stored logins
- Reach out to the platform’s support team with proof of ownership
If you’re locked out entirely, we’ll do our best to help you regain access. We’ve seen this happen before and can guide you through it.
How to avoid this in future
- Keep a record of who owns what
- Use business emails for account creation
- Never rely on a single person to hold all the keys
- Share logins securely using a password manager
- Regularly audit account access
Ownership is about more than just control. It’s about avoiding risk and making sure your business can run without disruption.
